Enhancing your German Vocabulary

If you want to enhance your German vocabulary, you need to practice, practice, and practice. Things you can do to practice include practicing with your friends and co-workers that speak German. We also encourage you to watch more German movies and shows when you can, and listen to German podcasts when you're on the go. You can also practice with various apps that are available for your mobile phone.

Practicing with your friends, co-workers, family, or a personal tutor

The best way to enhance your German vocabulary is to practice with a native German speaker. If you have a friend, co-worker, or family member that is a native German speaker, you can try to practice German with them. The more you can practice with them, the faster you will improve. Of course, if they start to find your request to practice German with them annoying, you may want to give them some space or a break. But if they don't mind practicing with you, then take the opportunity to improve your German with them.

If you don't have a friend, co-worker, or family member that you can practice German with, then you may want to consider hiring a personal tutor. If you hire a personal tutor, then your German can improve rapidly. You can ask your tutor to focus in on your German and help you with the details as you are learning. We would also suggest that you ask your tutor to provide you with homework, vocabulary recordings, and other video/audio that you can watch or listen to in between your lessons with the tutor. If a personal tutor is too expensive with you, try finding a small group class where the teacher is teaching no more than 4 or 5 students. For a small group class, you can still get some quality instruction from the teacher. However, we don't recommend learning from a class that is larger than 5 people because then, the teacher won't have enough time to pay attention to correcting your German.

Lastly, if you can't afford a personal tutor or a group class, you may consider doing a language exchange. That is, you can find another person that wants to learn English, and in exchange for teaching that person English, they can teach you German. However, please note that many language exchanges start off well but then the other person that you are doing the exchange with either gets busy, or they lose interest in doing the exchange.

Watch German movies and shows and listen to German podcasts

If you don't have anybody to practice German with, the next alternative is to watch German movies and TV shows on your free time. When you watch a German movie or TV show, try to get accurate English subtitles for that movie or show. In case you get stuck on a line that you don't understand, you can turn on the English subtitles for that part and learn from it. Also, it helps if you select from a variety of German movies and TV shows. For example, don't always watch the same batch of German movies with the same actor or actress, since that person will tend to pronounce things the same way and use similar vocabulary. To enhance your vocabulary, you want to differeng movies and TV shows with a different subject. This will help to expand your vocabulary to different subjects and themes.

If you are on the go and travelling, you can listen to German podcasts. Podcasts are a great way for you to pick up more vocabulary and you can also practice the new vocabulary as you listen to it. Of course, you still need to practice your new vocabulary in front of a native German speaker to make sure you are pronouncing the new vocabulary properly and also to ensure that your grammar is correct.

Download an app on your mobile phone to help you learn German

Lastly, you can download many apps for your mobile phone to help you learn German. Probably the most useful app to download would be a dictionary and an OCR scanner. An English to German dictionary will help to expand your German vocabulary. If your dictionary can understand voice input, that will be even better. Also, look for an OCR scanner. These days, there are many good programs that allow you to use your phone to scan the text, even in real time, and it can do a translation from German to English on the spot. If your dictionary has an OCR scanner, that is even better. If possible, look for a dictionary that has an OCR scanner and voice input, as well as having a comprehensive database of German words.
