Maul zu Frau Merkel

German NSFW: Maul zu Frau Merkel

There is a saying that describes the relationship between Germany and France pretty well.

Die Deutschen lieben Frankreich, bewundern es aber nicht. Die Franzosen bewundern Deutschland, lieben es aber nicht.
The Germans love France but don’t admire it, the French admire Germany but don’t love it.

A tweet of French communist politician Jean-Luc Mélenchon in response to Angela Merkel’s criticism on how France and Italy are handling their economies is pretty telling.

Maul zu, Frau #Merkel ! Frankreich ist frei. Occupez-vous de vos pauvres et de vos équipements en ruines !

I know, it is hard to formulate a political manifesto in 140 characters but the tweet is surely not an example of diplomacy, either. Nevertheless, let’s take the occasion and learn some expressions if you need to tell someone to shut up on social media or in real life.

If you want to start the polite way, you could say

Sei ruhig! = Be quiet. or in the formal way Seien Sie ruhig!

A bit more drastic but still not majorly insulting would be

Halt die Luft an! = Pipe down. or formal Halten Sie die Luft an!

Now, we get into Mélenchon territory as das Maul = muzzle, yab.

Therefore Maul zu! = Shut your yab.

Germans would usually express this by saying

Halt dein Maul! or formal Halten Sie Ihr Maul!

Another word for Maul would be die Fresse = kisser, puss or die Schnauze = snout

Fresse zu! Halt die Fresse! Halten Sie Ihre Schnauze!

Of course, you can spice up your insult by adding some adjectives to the mix like

dumm = stupid
blöd = dense
verdammt = damn

Halt dein dummes Maul! Halten Sie Ihre blöde Fresse! Halt deine verdammte Schnauze!

There you have it. You should, of course, always try to keep your temper and remember: using those insults is definitely NSFW (not safe for work) and could lead to other consequences when saying it to someone in real life, but that’s another post.

To finish this quick lesson, here is classic advice from German comedian Dieter Nuhr.
